Without a saving relationship with Jesus Christ all information about the church is lost. But we must not mistakenly reason that one’s relationship with Christ minimises the importance of His Local Church. Yet this is precisely what multitudes of Christians assume and act out. a dissatisfaction of conditional loyalty, which has produced an army of church hitchhikers. The hitchhiker’s thumb says, “You buy the car, pay for repairs and upkeep and insurance, fill the car with petrol — and I’ll ride with you. But if you have an accident, you are on your own! And I’ll probably sue you.” So it is with the statement of belief of so many of today’s church attenders: “You go to the meetings and serve on the committees, you clean, you grapple with the issues and do the work of the church, the ministering to others, witnessing, and pay the bills and I’ll come along for the ride. But if things do not suit me, I’ll criticise and complain and probably bail out — my thumb is always out for a better lift.”

This supposed loyalty is fuelled by a “consumer philosophy” — a “Burger King – Have It Your Way” – Or a McDonalds “McChristianity—I’m Lovin’ It” mentality — which picks and chooses here and there to fill one’s religious shopping list. There are hitchhikers who…

The answer for most people is that everyone goes to church on Sundays, people throughout history have gone to church on Sundays (Catholic and Protestant), it is a Christian tradition to attend church on Sundays. Others might say, that we should worship the Lord every day and that we do not need to meet on Sundays. There are others who say that we should meet on Saturdays since that is when Jesus went to the synagog. There are yet others who believe that Sundays are the new Sabbath and that we ought to observe Sundays as the Jews observed Saturdays. What is the answer?

How to find the wrong church.

I noticed a few weeks ago that the streets in the city centre were filled with more cars than usual. As I walked through the cold autumn air, across

Lower Mallow Street to my car, several parents with their older teens walked past. I realised a new year at the Universities had begun again. The busyness in the city was the new and returning students visiting the city with their parents, getting their bearings, and enjoying their last few moments together.

Fall brings a lot of movement into the Limerick City area. Summer holiday is over, school is beginning, colleges and universities are welcoming back old students, as well as new and foreign.
