The Nature of the Holy Spirit

The moment that someone is saved, when they receive Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour, the Bible tells us that they also receive the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 1:13  In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

If they do not have the Holy Spirit, the Bible says that they are not saved.

Romans 8:9  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

In this article, we are going to look at three names that are given to the Holy Spirit. These names reveal the nature of the third part of the
trinity of God.

1. Spirit of Grace
Hebrews 10:29  Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Grace. With grace, unmerited favour, He will keep us from being overcome by the wickedness of the world. He will also help us to show grace to others, by helping us to
love our enemies. He will help us to do good to those who hate us. He will help us to turn the other cheek. He will help us to be long-suffering.

2 Peter 3:18  But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

2. Spirit of Holiness
Romans 1:4  And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Holiness. Meaning He will enable us to live lives that are holy. He will enable us to enjoy things that are pure: pure jokes, pure films, pure music. The unsaved world despises these things, but if we are living and walking in the Spirit, we will be drawn toward things that are holy. On the other hand, as we live in the flesh, and feed our flesh but not the Spirit, we will be drawn to the things of the flesh.

Even music, some erroneously say that all music is amoral, but the truth is there is music that pertains or satisfies our flesh, and music that satisfies to the spirit. As we listen to spiritual music, the Holy Spirit can work freely in our lives to a greater extent.
Galatians 5:17  For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Holiness, and as we walk with God and yield to Him, He will lead us to things that are holy.

Spirit of Wisdom
Ephesians 1:17  That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

The Holy Spirit is also the Spirit of Wisdom. I was recently speaking to young adults, and I told them that God wants us to be wise, and wisdom is not knowledge. Knowledge is what you acquire in school and the university, but wisdom knows how to take knowledge and apply it. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of wisdom and will give us the wisdom that we need. He will reveal things to you. He will show you how to handle difficult situations or problems that you are experiencing in your life.

I know about a Pastor who would counsel people, and the first thing he would do is ask, "Are you going to
church regularly? Are you praying regularly? Are you reading your Bible regularly? Are you talking to others about the gospel regularly? Are you tithing?"

If the individual the pastor was counselling answers "no" to any of his questions, than the pastor would not counsel them until they got those things in order. The problems we face mostly stem from the fact that we are not walking with God and growing in our Christian life. People who consistently do those five things are going to need very little counsel. By walking with God and growing, He will give them the wisdom that they need in their life through the Holy Spirit.

An Carraig Baptist Church, we take a literal, fundamental approach to the Bible (AV 1611). We are also a local, independent body of believers, which means we are not subject to any religious hierarchy. Being "Baptist" means, we hold to the Bible based, Baptist Distinctives, that have been the hallmark of true Baptist churches through the centuries.
