Four Reasons Why You Need an Internet Blocker
Ten years ago the average person probably had a desktop computer, or laptop, in their home. Today, our lives are invaded by smartphones, tablets, smart home technology, smart TV's, internet Baby monitors, and new internet devices being sold on the market each week. When you add all the friends and family logging into your internet with your password, you can see how it has become a large part of our lives.
In this day of accessible technology and unlimited information, I believe every person needs an internet blocking security system in their home and workplace, and I have four reasons why;
The Bible tells us to "Abstain from all appearance of evil." I Thessalonians 5:22. Four benefits of protecting your internet, and the reasons I believe everyone should, is to…
1. Protect children.
Children are vulnerable and influenced by the types of things they are exposed to. The internet, left alone, is an open gateway, not only to good information, but also some very corrupt, deviant sites as well. Just as you would not allow strangers to take your children, we should also protect them from strangers influencing them on the internet.
2. Protect integrity.
Another area to consider protecting is your own integrity. Did you know ISP's keep a running log of all the websites you visit? When there is criminal activity this is one of the places that is investigated. You might think you are protected because you have a solution on your computer, but your internet integrity could be being compromised through someone else's computer. Whether it is by a friend who has your password, or a hacker sitting in their car outside your home. If a shady site is accessed through your internet connection it may look as if it was you.
3. Protect others.
We should protect our visitors when they enter our home. When others access the internet, whether it be family, a friend, or the neighbours children, it would be helpful to have an internet safe haven in your home. This will give visitors protection from visiting corrupt sites knowingly, or unknowingly.
4. Protect yourself.
My last reason to protect your home network is to protect yourself. Let's be honest, temptations are all around us. If you are a serious Christian, you realise the temptations there are in the world, and on the internet. Adding a filter to your router is a safety net for yourself as well. It makes less desirable sites more difficult to access. When you have to enter a code, or access a site to give yourself permission it will make you think twice. Keeping yourself accountable.
A couple weeks ago, I wrote a post on protecting your home and internet searches. In this post I want to give you another app that I think you will find helpful. OpenDNS. This is a free internet blocking service (with a paid $19.99/year option) that will block and protect every device (laptops, smartphones, tablets, DVRs, game consoles, TVs, etc) connected to your router, from shady immoral internet sites. It has built-in fraud and phishing protection, you can also add your own sites to the blacklist, and it actually speeds up your connection. This solution also allows you to place your own message onscreen, when a website is blocked. You could put a Bible verse there as a reminder…"I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? Job 31:1.
