Three Reasons I Am Secure in Christ
20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
Reading these verses, it seems you can lose your salvation, but you need to read it in context and go back to verse…
…one, to which the whole chapter is referring.
2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
The previous verses are referring to unsaved lost teachers who denied "the Lord that bought them". They rejected Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour. These are people who probably grew up in a Christian home, or attended a Christian church. Maybe they are people who attended a church that taught salvation by grace through faith alone, but they never personally trusted the Lord as their Saviour.
2 Peter 3:16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest (to twist), as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
The Bible is clear that there will be verses that are difficult to understand, so it should not surprise us where we come across a verse that is difficult to comprehend, or don't seem to match other verses. I am going to give five reasons I know my salvation is secure in Christ.
1. I know my salvation is secure in Christ, because of God's description of salvation. The Bible describes Salvation as "Full Assurance."
And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
If you can lose your salvation, how can you have full assurance? Those who are eternally secure in Christ have a full assurance that they will be in heaven the moment they pass away. They do not have to worry or question it.
18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation (comfort), who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;
The Bible describes Salvation as a strong consolation (comfort) & hope sure and steadfast, which could only be the description of something that is truly secure.
2. I know I am eternally secure, because of God's description of what I am. The Bible tells me that I am Forgiven.
1 John 2:12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
Romans 4:7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
The Bible also tells me that I am Justified.
Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
The Bible tells me that I am a New Creation.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
We do not become a new creature, then old, then new. We become an entirely new being. We may look the same but our nature changes when we trust the Lord as our Saviour.
The Bible tells me that I am Born Again.
1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
-You cannot be unborn
The Bible tells me that I am Passed from Death unto Life.
1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
When you are saved you pass from death to life, you are not going to die, be alive, die, be alive, over and over again. Either you are dead, or you are alive. Salvation is receiving eternal life through Jesus Christ.
The Bible tells me that I am Saved.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
We "are" saved, not "will be", not "might be", but we "are" saved. That is present tense. We are saved by grace, unmerited, unearned favour from God. If God saved us from hell, and it is not by our works, then we can’t lose it by our actions either.
3. I know I am eternally secure, because of God's description of what I have. The Bible says I have been Sealed with the Holy Spirit.
14 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
If a sinful being could undo God’s seal of the Holy Spirit than it was not really sealed. The Bible says that when we were saved, we were sealed with the Holy Spirit and it is forever, until the redemption of the purchased possession, your soul. We are sealed until the day Jesus brings us home.
The Bible says I have Eternal Life & Eternal Redemption
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
When you have everlasting, eternal life, or eternal redemption, that is what it is… eternal. If you could lose eternal life or redemption it was not eternal, it was only temporary.
At An Carraig Baptist Church, we take a literal, fundamental approach to the Bible (AV 1611). We are also a local, independent body of believers, which means we are not subject to any religious hierarchy. Being "Baptist" means, we hold to the Bible based, Baptist Distinctives, that have been the hallmark of true Baptist churches through the centuries.
